Stars in the Darkness

"When it is dark enough, you can see the stars." (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

How are you feeling today? It's a beautiful, bright, crisp January morning, but maybe, despite the clear light, you can only see darkness.

Look at the above quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. What do you think he means? Yes, we can literally see the stars when it is really dark, but perhaps he's telling us that even through our darkest moments we can see positivity and brightness.

Think about a time when everything has seemed dark and negative. Were there moments of brightness? Did something positive come out of the experience? Did you see the stars through the darkness?

Write about it for ten minutes. Set a timer. Don't plan what you are going to write, just keep your hand moving! Never mind about grammar, spelling or punctuation. If you get stuck, just write "I can see the stars", and see what comes next.

  1. Darkness reminds me of the saying, "there is light at the end of the tunnel" when I was ill, I could not believe in this. But now I do. It means those who have been through darkness, better days are coming. You may not see it at the time, but they will surely come. With patience and prayer.

Stars cannot shine without darkness. We need the darkness, but it doesn't define us. It makes us appreciate the light/stars.

My experience of this is in hospital. Nothing but darkness surrounded me. The only thing which kept me going was my faith and hope in God. If I did not have God, there would be no light.

It is easy to turn to God on our worst days, but we should attempt to remember God during our best days too.

I can see the stars in the night sky. Shining brightly and then I remember our lost loved ones shining their light on us. Is it me or does the sky look more beautiful when someone is in heaven? Until we meet again...x

I can see the stars shining in my eyes, after I fall, I rise, fall, rise again etc. I may struggle but quitting is not a choice. Let's see what it feels like NOT to quit.

My favourite punjabi song is called "To the stars" ... escaping from reality and into a dream/fantasy world; my happy place.
