Cuckoo Surprise

Photo by David Clode on Unsplash

On our tandem ride today, I was surprised and thrilled to hear a cuckoo. It was in the woods on cycle Route 66, between Bradley and Mirfield. It's a long time since I heard a cuckoo. I remember when I was a child, and we used to go on holiday to Glasshouses, in Nidderdale, I used to hear a cuckoo calling from 'Cuckoo Gate', on the other side of the valley. Bradford-born composer Delius wrote a beautiful piece of music called 'On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring'. You can click here to listen; can you spot the cuckoo?

Writing prompt: What has surprised you recently? Maybe it was hearing, seeing, or smelling something. Perhaps it was someone's actions - we are witnessing many wonderful ad unexpected kindnesses during lock-down. Write for ten minutes about the surprise. Share your thoughts below if you like.
