Is it TV heaven or TV hell for you at the moment? During lock-down most of us have far more time on our hands to fill. If you have a TV, is it more tempting now to turn it on and sit for hours watching 'Homes Under the Hammer' , 'The Repair Shop' or 'Gogglebox', or are you like the woman in the picture - just glad to switch it off and enjoy the peace and quiet?
I find it hard to watch to news, as it now often seems so sad and disheartening, but feel I should keep up to date with the current Covid 19 situation. There are uplifting stories, however, like the 99-year-old who has raised more than £16m for the NHS by walking laps of his garden.
So, during the lock-down, what have you been watching (or not watching)? Just before the corona virus pandemic kicked off, we watched boxed sets of the whole of 'Northern Exposure', a series from the 90s set in Alaska. We don't have anything fancy on our TV like Netflix, and I don't watch soaps, so, if it's a choice between 'Dinner Date' or another repeat of 'Doc Martin', I'll switch it off.
Is it just me looking back through rose-coloured spectacles, or was TV better in years gone by? Programmes like 'Morecambe and Wise', 'Z-cars', 'Dallas' (!), 'Thirty Something' were great favourites. Even children's TV seemed better with 'Multi-Coloured Swapshop', 'Tiswas', 'Magpie' and 'Crackerjack', not to mention 'Bill and Ben', 'The Woodentops' and 'Tales from the Riverbank' (I'm really showing my age now).
One of my earliest memories is watching 'Emergency Ward 10' with my Nanna. She had a tiny, green TV screen encased in a massive, polished wooden cupboard, that took pride of place in her kitchen. It was a big treat; I would sit in the dark, staring at the tiny screen, while my grandma plied me with sweets and ice-cream soda. (I blame her for my rotten teeth).
Writing Prompt: TV heaven or hell? Write down your thoughts about TV, positive or negative, for ten minutes. It could be a memory, or maybe your thoughts on what's currently on our screens. Don't plan, edit, or worry about spelling etc. Just keep writing. share some of your thoughts below if you like.
TV can be seen as heaven and hell. It depends. I'm fed up of constant coronavirus updates and the anxiety and depression which is attached to it. I rarely keep upto daye anymore in terms of coronavirus. It is taking my sanity away. Now, I will read the news headline and a family member notifies me if there has been a change in the news. I enjoy tv as I enjoy comedy, especially when everyone is panicking and stressing. I have been watching The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and it's nice to laugh out loud. Real laughter. We also have DisneyPlus, and it's nice to watch old disney movies / tv series. Such as That's so Raven, Hannah Montana, Zack and Cody, and High School Musical. It's nice to let go of the stress, even if it is for a short while. The only negative is when you notice you have been watching tv all day long!! Eastenders is the only soap I watch, which has now been cut down from 4 days to 2 days (sad, I know). For me, tv is a positive, it can be an escape from reality. My family enjoy watching Rich House Poor House, and Rich kids go skint. These programmes are interesting and surely can be addictive. Its interesting to see how normal basic people make it to the top. Interesting life stories.
