The future is a little uncertain at the moment. We're not quite sure what is around the next corner. Things will change, but it may be some time before we get back to any sense of normality. So, your bucket list, all the things you want to do, experience, or achieve before you die, might have to be put on hold. Those dreams of sky-diving, volunteering in Africa, learning to play the guitar, owning a parrot (!) may have to wait a while longer. Instead of wallowing or pining for a list that may or may not at this stage be achievable, why not make a reverse bucket list and write down all the things you have accomplished so far. Think back, delve into your memory and bring to mind things you've achieved, wonderful places you've already visited, great meals you've already cooked, wonderful music you've already listened to.
Perhaps you could start out approaching it chronologically and think about your teenage years… Or geographically? Or you could generate the memories by using the senses as the spark - a taste, smell, sight, sound or feeling?
For me, I'd definitely have to include seeing Marvin Gaye at St George's Hall in Bradford. He was only a few feet away on stage! Other things on my list would have to include learning to drive, flying for the first time at the age of 44, giving birth and touring New Zealand in a camper van.
If it seems difficult trawling back through your life, just focus on the things you have already accomplished since lock-down started, for example:
- I went for a long walk today
- I chatted with a friend on the phone
- I wrote in my journal every day for a week
- I overcame my feelings of anxiety today
Writing about the positive things you have already accomplished with raise you spirits, boost your confidence and set you up for all the wonderful things that are yet to come. When you've made your list, share it below if you like.
