One of the more welcome changes, as restrictions are lifted and we move to Step 3, is that cinemas can open up again. I've missed our regular trips to watch a film, and am so looking forward to visiting my favourite local venue, Elland Rex, to watch 'Nomadland'.
When I was growing up, there were cinemas all across my home city of Bradford. We were lucky enough to have the Lyceum Cinema within easy walking distance of our house in Thornbury. I can remember going to the pictures to see 'The Young Ones' and 'One Hundred and One Dalmatians'. Sometimes, as a treat, we would get a bag of chips with scraps and lashings of salt and vinegar, from Albert and Annie's fish and chip shop, to eat from newspaper on the way home, in the dark. Sadly, the Lyceum closed in 1962, but there were plenty of other cinemas in Bradford: The Odeon, ABC, Ritz, Cinecentre, Theatre Royal, to name but a few. Going to the 'flicks' was always a thrill as a teenager - it still is.
Writing Prompts:
- Make a list of your top ten favourite films. Choose one and write about it. Why did you like it? How did it make you feel? Where did you see it? Who saw it with you? Write for ten minutes.
- Did you have a favourite cinema growing up? If so, where was it? What was it like? Write about it and the memories it brings.
