Precious Drops of Water

Summer Shower by Emily Dickinson

A Drop fell on the Apple Tree –
Another – on the Roof –
A Half a Dozen kissed the Eaves –
And made the Gables laugh –

A few went out to help the Brook,
That went to help the Sea –
Myself Conjectured were they Pearls –
What Necklaces could be …

My garden is so dry. It seems a long time since we had a really good down-pour. A 'summer shower' would be most welcome.

My plants may be parched, but at least when I'm in need of a drink I can turn on a tap to get myself some water. That's a resource many people don't have, and I don't take it for granted. At least I don't have to set off each day to collect water - a task that often falls to women and girls in many parts of the world. Click here to find out more.

According to The Water Project, nearly one billion people do not have access to clean, safe water - that's the equivalent of 1 in 8 people on the planet. Lack of access to clean drinking water is one of the greatest causes of poverty in Africa. Click here to find out what it's really like to live without clean water and what is being done about it.

Writing prompts:

  • Make a list of all the many ways you use water during your day. Choose one way and write about why it is important to you.
  • Look at your list again and imagine that you do not have access to water from a tap, but have to make a long journey to collect it every day. Write about how your day would be different?
  • Make another list of all the resources you can access every day without difficulty, including water. Express your gratitude, in writing, for all, or some of them.
