Gardens and Libraries

"If you have a garden and a library you have everything you need."   Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero was right; I'm grateful for both gardens and libraries.

My own garden is somewhat overgrown at the moment, especially with weeds, but is home to all kinds of wildlife (I have given up the battle with slugs and snails). It's been a particular joy over the past 18 months. I have spent hours there, enjoying what I have created and the peace and calm it brings.

Libraries have struggled during the Covid pandemic, being forced to close for months because of restrictions. Yet staff at my much-appreciated Brighouse Library worked hard throughout to keep me supplied with books during periods when we could 'click and collect', if not browse.

Two of my local libraries, Hipperholme and Shelf, remain closed post-pandemic, and it looks as though that may be permanent, despite petitions to try and save them. This is in keeping with what seems to be happening all over the country. How terribly sad it is. I've been a member of a library since before I could read, when my mum used to take me to the old Laisterdyke Library in Bradford. She triggered a life-long habit. Click here to read more about why libraries are good for you.

Writing Prompts:
  • Do you agree with Cicero? Explore the question in your writing.
  • Write about your own garden, one you have visited, or one from your imagination. Use all your senses to explore the colours, scents, sounds, textures and the weather.
  • Write about an experience you have had in a library (real or imaginary).
  • Are libraries important? Make a list of all the reasons why.
  • Write about what else you need in your life (if anything) in addition to a garden and a library.
