"Finish every day and be done with it…You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. To-morrow is a new day; you shall begin it well and serenely, and with too high a spirit to be cumbered* with your old nonsense." Ralph Waldo Emerson
*cumbered = hampered, hindered
When day comes, we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid.
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.
Do you ever go to bed at night and, instead of going to sleep, lie awake thinking about mistakes you made that day and the things you could have done better? If so, Emerson's advice above is really helpful.
We all try our best, and that's good enough. It doesn't do to dwell on the past, and it can't be changed. Better to start afresh on a new page each day.
Writing prompt:
- Make a list of all the 'blunders' you made today and of any 'absurdities' that crept in. If you like, take this a stage further by choosing one mistake you made and writing about it for a few minutes. Now, read through your list, then tear it up and throw it away.
- Do you start your day in a calm, peaceful and untroubled way? If not, write about what you could do to bring about this state of mind.
- We're all sometimes hindered by our 'old nonsense' -the stuff that keeps coming up again and again, making us doubt ourselves, lack confidence and become anxious. Write about your 'old nonsense.'
- Amanda Gorman tells us (above) that "there is always light if we are brave enough to see it." Write about what 'light' is waiting for you tomorrow morning.
