“Embrace diversity.
Unite—
Or be divided,
robbed,
ruled,

By those who see you as prey.
Embrace diversity

Where the borders of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia meet there is a monument, "The Three Sisters" (see above). It was erected in 975 as a symbol of unity and friendship between the three peoples. The Ukranian village of Senkivka sits at this border crossing. Prior to 2014 the border crossing would be opened and a unity festival held, with Ukranian, Belarusians and Russians celebrating together. Click here, here and here to find out more about the monument, the village and the festival.
Writing Prompts:
- Write about a time when you celebrated at a festival. Use all your senses to describe what experienced.
- Have you ever felt a great sense of unity, perhaps with another person, a country, something in nature? Set a timer and write about it without stopping for five minutes.
- In your writing, describe a time when the unity you felt with someone, or something, was broken. How did it feel? Did you manage to repair it? Set a timer for six minutes.
- Choose one of the quotes above about 'unity' as a trigger for your writing.
