Beach-combing

Give me a quiet beach with stones and shells and I am happy to explore for the next couple of hours, walking slowly, feeling the sun on my face and the wind in my hair. These mindful moments on beaches always unearth treasures. Once you 'get your eye in' you can spot all sorts: an unusually shaped stone, a sparkling pebble, a beautifully decorated piece of pottery, a pale, smooth piece of driftwood, a mermaid's purse, or a perfectly formed shell.

When I visit the Isles of Scilly the wonderful beaches there deliver up cowrie shells, also know as 'guinea money' because they were used as a currency in West Africa. Sometimes, among the assorted detritus that is washed up by the tide, you can find unusual objects: a pair of glasses, a piece of jewellery, or even a ten pound note!

What I would really love to find on a beach, or bobbing about in the waves close to the shore, is a bottle with a message inside. Click here for some stories about messages that have been found in bottles.

Writing prompt: What about you?

1. Write about something you have found on a beach. It could be anything. Describe it. Did you keep it or put it back? What made it special?

2. Write about something you would love to find on a beach.

3. Write about a time, real or imaginary, when you wandered a beach alone. Describe the beach. What thoughts were in your head? What happened?
