This week, I have been reflecting on 'change.' We seem to have had so much of it this year resulting from the Covid pandemic, and more changes are on the horizon- I hope some we can welcome.
Change can be stressful, especially if it happens quickly and unexpectedly. It involves letting go of the familiar and accepting something new. The transition period in between can be difficult.
As I approach my 65th birthday, I'm aware of the huge changes that have taken place in my life. I think I've learnt that it's no good to resist change (whether it be to our physical or emotional lives), especially if we have no control over it. The key perhaps is acceptance and the realisation that despite a background of constant change there are deep, strong, stable and beautiful things that always remain.
I went for a walk today with my sister and we passed Scout Hall. Thought to be built in the early 17th century, it has survived many changes. It was once described as a "half derelict palace in the English countryside" having fallen into a state of decay and ruin. Despite its dereliction (though I think it is currently lived in) the wonderful facades, with the 365 windows, remain and the building still stands proud and tall.
Writing prompt:
- Do you find change stressful? Write about a time of change that you found difficult.
- What remains stable, strong and beautiful in your life, despite all the changes?
