October is Black History Month when there's an opportunity to celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions made by the African diaspora. It is refreshing to see how my former employer, the WEA (Workers' Educational Association), is approaching BHM. They see it as "a start in balancing the curriculum – but we know that to make positive change we need to embed a diverse curriculum year round." Click here to learn more about the WEA's Black History Month courses and social media activity.
Especially interesting are two of the links. One is to the Black Curriculum which has as one of its aims "to teach an accessible educational Black British history curriculum that raises attainment for young people." The other is to Black Minds Matter, whose mission is to connect Black individuals and families with free mental health services — by professional Black therapists to support their mental health.

Writing prompts:
- What does Black History Month mean to you? Write about it. (If you have no direct experience, write about what you think it ought to mean).
- Write in response to the image above for seven minutes. Set a timer.
- If you have children in school, do you think there is a lack of Black British history in the UK curriculum.
