“There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.”- The Kite Runner
"Be grateful for what you have and be ready to share it when the time comes." - Michelle Obama
Yesterday teatime I cooked a delicious meal. Barley pilaf with tofu may not be to everyone's liking, especially if you are a meat eater, but it was nutritious and cheap. (Click here for the recipe). I took it for granted that I was able to shop at the local supermarket and get all the ingredients I needed, right down to the pomegranate seeds I sprinkled on the top.
Right now children in Afghanistan are facing starvation in the coming harsh winter, with 9.7 million in need of humanitarian assistance. Children are having to work to try to make ends meet. Click here to watch some young shoe-shine boys tell their story.
Families fleeing violence are making make-shift shelters and have little access to food. Charities are helping. A relative of mine works for Warchild. Click here to find out how they are helping.
Writing prompt:
- Have you ever had to worry about where your next meal was coming from? Set a timer for six minutes and write in response to that question.
- Write about what you grateful for right now, in this moment.
- Do you agree with Michelle Obama that we should be 'ready to share'? Write about the ways you share what you have, or how others share what they have with you.
