World Radio Day

"Television contracts the imagination and radio expands it." - Terry Wogan

"I prefer radio to TV because the pictures are better." -Alistair Cooke

"Our blessed radio. It gives us eyes and ears out into the world. We listen to the German station only for good music. And we listen to the BBC for hope." - Anne Frank

Today is World Radio Day and, as a radio addict, I am pleased to learn that, according to UNESCO: "At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium."

I switch on the radio at 7am, then BBC Radio 4, 3 and 2 provide the background to my day. Already today I've learnt about stone curlews on 'Tweet of the Day', laughed with Paddy O'Connell on 'Broadcasting House', been brought almost to tears by Tom in 'The Archers' and enjoyed Lesley Caron's interesting and eclectic choice of music on 'Desert Island Discs."

I was brought up with the radio and such programmes as 'Listen With Mother', 'Workers' Playtime', 'Children's Favourites' and 'Sing Something Simple' . My first 'transistor' was bought for me by my parents, and was bright red, with stickers to show where to find the new 'Radio 1' channel on the dial. 'Pick of the Pops' with Alan Freeman was a weekly must, as well as Simon Dee's 'Under the Bedclothes Club on Luxembourg (which introduced me to Motown).

My radio is my trusted friend. "Radio continues to be one of the most trusted and used media in the world, according to different international reports. The theme of the 2022 edition of World Radio Day is thus devoted to "Radio and Trust". I trust BBC radio journalism to give me my daily news.

Writing Prompt:

  • Did you listen to the radio as a child or teenager? Write about the programmes that stick in your mind. Who did you listen with and where?
  • How do you think radio expands your imagination in a way that tv does not? Write about it.
  • Write about where you get your news and whether you can trust it.
