It Felt Love

How
Did the rose
Ever open its heart

And give to this world
All its
Beauty?

It felt the encouragement of light
Against its
Being,

Otherwise,
We all remain

Frightened

All too often when teaching adults I came across a student who thought their writing not worthy of praise or recognition, and was therefore afraid to share it for fear of ridicule, or mockery. Their fears generally stemmed from times when they were younger, at school, when someone had written them off as being stupid, lazy or incompetent, and had failed to offer praise and encouragement. 

It takes courage then to expose ourselves and our talents to the world, and we are all wary of criticism, but when we are prepared to take that risk, invariably someone will greet us with love and admiration.

The rose would stay curled up tight in a bud if it not feel the 'encouragement of light' and dare to open. Be brave enough to share something wonderful on this blog; open yourself up like the rose and we will all be the richer for it.

Writing prompts:

• Write about a time when you have felt criticised and belittled. Set a timer for six minutes and write without stopping.
• Has there been a time when you have felt afraid to open yourself up to others for fear or criticism or rejection. Write about that time.
• Write about something you have dared to share with the world that has been met with praise and admiration.
