  Mix a Pancake

Mix a pancake,

Stir a pancake,

Pop it in the pan;

Fry the pancake,

Toss the pancake—

Catch it if you can.

Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, which is always held 46 days (40 fasting days and 6 Sundays) before Easter Sunday. It is traditionally a day of ‘shriving ‘ or confessing, and the day for eating of ‘pancakes’ made out of sugar, fat, flour and eggs; the main foods restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.

I won't be doing any fasting, but I will definitely be eating pancakes. In our house, we're not patient enough cook a whole batch and stack them; they are eaten one by one, hot from the pan (after flipping or tossing). I prefer lemon juice and a sprinkle of sugar on mine, but honey, golden or maple syrup and chocolate sauce are also delicious.

Click here for a video on how to make basic pancakes. You could go savoury of course, so here's a recipe to try.

Writing prompts:
  • Write about a time when you ate pancakes. Describe the experience using all your senses.
  • Will you be making any sacrifices this Lent? Maybe it's a good time to abstain from chocolate, or that regular flat white? Whether or not you recognise Lent, make a list of all the things you could give up, that you don't really need in your life. It might be something you eat, a habit you hate, an emotion you don't enjoy, or even a person or place.
  • Now choose one of things you'd like to give up and write for six minutes about why and how you'll do it.
