One Peaceful Moment

"In a time of destruction, create something: a poem, a parade, a community, a school, a vow, a moral principle; one peaceful moment."
Maxine Hong Kingston

The walk up to Coley from my house is always a pleasant one, at any time of year, but especially on a bright, sunny day like today when signs of Spring abound. En route there is often a thrush singing joyfully. and perhaps reminding us that eventually there will be better things to come. Here's my recording.

The churchyard at St John the Baptist, Coley, is the perfect place to create 'one peaceful moment'. I sat on the bench and practised a 'Sounds and Thoughts' mindfulness meditation. It felt somewhat self-indulgent, given all the noise, chaos and destruction we are currently witnessing in Ukraine.

I was truly grateful, however, to be able to spend a few moments just being present in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. I hope that all the people of Ukraine will find their own moments of peace, quiet and safety in the not-too-distant future.

Writing prompts:

  • Have you managed to get 'one peaceful moment' today? If so, write about it and how it made you feel.
  • During these days of war and destruction in Ukraine have you managed to 'create something', as the writer above suggests? Write about it.
  • Can you create a poem about what is happening in Ukraine right now? If so, please share it below.
