Great Ships

Now the spring is in the town,
Now the wind is in the tree,
And the wintered keels go down
To the calling of the sea.

Who could bear to stay indoor,
Now the wind is in the street,
For the creaking of the oar
And the tugging of the sheet!

Now the spring is in the town,
Who would not a rover be,
When the wintered keels go down
To the calling of the sea?

Bliss Carmen

"When a great ship is in harbour and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for." - Clarissa Pinkola Estés

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide

Writing prompts:

  • Now "spring is in the town" what new adventure is calling you? Write about it - real or imaginary.
  • Write for three minutes about where you feel safe, then for another three about where you could dare to go, even though that might be rather scary.
  • Write about what is stopping you from setting out and 'losing sight of the shore'.

  1. This brought back fond memories of one of my favourite pieces of music, which I am now listening to. The Adagio from the ballet Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian. Many know this music but not it's true identityand origins.
